Who We are
Friends of Amoru is a US 501 (c) 3 that is financing the building and operation of Amoru International Secondary School in Kaberamaido District, Uganda. The Board of Directors is paying for all administrative costs.
Mission statement: To educate youth toward a healthy, productive and peaceful life through the development of curiosity and integrity.
Why Kaberamaido Uganda? We so often hear about unintended consequences which seem always to be negative; however, they also can be positive. The idea for Amoru International Secondary School is one of those positive unintended consequences. It emerged from an American family's holiday safari in December 2000 which was led by Denis Erabu. After two weeks together, Denis had become a friend. He always has dreamed of establishing a school in his native district, Kaberamaido, in Uganda.
Friends of Amuro has been formed to provide financial support to make his dream a reality. Kabermaido is the poorest district in Uganda. It is also the district with the most population growth which means lots of children. 88.3 % of the households engage in subsistence farming. The government of Uganda has set the goal of eradicating poverty in Kaberamaido by 2023. (MoFPED 2012). That goal cannot be reached without more educational opportunities. There is a huge gap between the number of eligible students and available secondary schools in that district. Six thousand children pass the exiting exam and are ready for secondary or vocational education. The present school system only can absorb 3,000. Friends of Amoru plans to lessen that gap by providing for a new secondary school. This school will follow the national curriculum which emphasizes math and science. Eighty students will be accepted each year. They will experience intensive computer training as well as the national curriculum. Within five years, the school will have 380 students.
